Lab Team

Dr Aresha Martinez-Cardoso is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Chicago. She directs the Embodying Race(ism) lab, conducting research with a team of undergraduate and graduate students. Dr AMC grew up in farmtowns in California’s Central Valley before pursuing a BA in Latin American Studies and MS in Community Health Science at UCLA. She went on to earn her PhD In Health Education and Health Behavior from the University of Michigan with training in health demography. In 2018 she began a postdoc-to-faculty position at the University of Chicago through Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellows Program. She promoted to Assistant Professor in 2020.

 

 


Current Lab Members

James Kenniff is a fourth year Biological Sciences major and Environmental and Urban Studies minor. He works primarily on the Incarceration Nation project, which he aims to turn into a thesis for the Biology major’s Global and Public Health Track. Outside of the lab, he scribes in UCM’s Emergency Department, has interned with NYC Health + Hospital’s Social Determinants Team, and put together heaps of videos on disability issues for Strategy for Access. For fun, he leads the épée team of the Fencing Club and helps bring concerts to campus for the Major Activities Board. jkenniff@uchicago.edu

 

 

 

Meiyi Li is a graduate student in the MAPSS program, concentrating in sociology. She is broadly interested in health, aging, and social networks and works on the Brain Waste project. Her research examines how social connectedness and health are shaped by the physical and social context, and what are the specific mechanisms linking social networks and health in later life. meiyili@uchicago.edu

 

 

 

 

Paige Evans is a second year Biological Sciences major that plans to pursue the Global and Public Health Track along with aBusiness Economics major.She isworking on the Incarceration Nation Project as well as other projects within the lab. Cal Chengqi Fang is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Public Health Sciences, UChicago. His research interests range from dental health to emergency care delivery, specifically under the lens of racial inequality. He works on the Structural Racism project within the lab. Prior to his Ph.D., he obtained a M.P.P. from Harris at UChicago and a B.A. in sociology and international politics from Peking University.          cal.cf@uchicago.edu
